Greetings people of Earth. Today I bring to you Zodiac IPA by Omnipollo which is brewed in Stockholm, Sweden and good ol' Toronto, Ontario. I'm assuming this particular can was brewed in Toronto since the LCBO isn't well known for selling Swedish craft beers.
The can is one of the best I've seen, and the beer itself is an odd, off colour sort of yellow with next to no carbonation and a significant 6.2%. There's very little info on the can for a beer blog guy to see, so I will have to move on to tasting it.
Let's see what those crazy Swedes have been up to.
It starts out with Chuck Norris style roundhouse kick to the face with boot made of hops, then heads right into bitter town. The ride doesn't end there, my friends. After the bitterness, there's a sweet fruity finish that strikes me as odd compared to most other IPA's in that the flavours usually start hoppy, then you get your fruit tones, and then there's a bitter finish. Not this time, compadre. The citrus (grapefruit?) finish is a nice change, actually.
Would I say this beer is out of this world (sooo cheesy, I know)? No, I wouldn't go that far. It's a one-off beer for me, but your results may vary. I can see how a few too many of these babies might just leave you feeling like an alien abducted you, wiped your memory of the night entirely, and then ran over your head with some kind of space train.
As is the case with other IPA's, this one should be enjoyed in an IPA glass, because, you know, it's an IPA.
My rating: 7.5/10
My lovely wife is my second sipper, and she does NOT like super hoppy IPA's. This one is not going to be the exception that proves the rule. In fact, this one gets her lowest rating since I started doing this.
My wife's rating: -1/10. A bit harsh, perhaps, but she knows what she likes and what she doesn't like. Zodiac is the latter.
There you have it, friends. Head on over the omnipollo.com to see what else the brewers there have to offer, but be warned: there are some...unusual... options available.
