Welcome to Beers and Such, the world's greatest craft beer review blog as voted by me and my dog, Murphy. Granted he doesn't drink beer, being a dog and all, but that doesn't mean he can't tell a good beer review site from a bad one. Geez.
Today I'm going to be trying The Ringmaster Mango Milkshake IPA, the second beer in my mini focus on Railway City Brewing Co located in the glorious metropolis of St Thomas, Ontario. According to the can, this beer is from the Side Show Series, which I am not familiar with, but there are lots of things I'm not familiar with. I'm pretty excited about this one. I can smell the mango in it and it blends nicely with the hoppy aroma.
I'm not sure what makes this a milkshake though...
It's cloudy, it's 5.3%, and it's making me thirsty.
Time to have a go.
That's...different...
So, how do I describe this? It starts out with a surprisingly light hop taste considering the density of the hop aroma, then it goes right to bitter in the middle stanza before finishing almost like a lager. Then, after what seems like a long time, there's a mango sweetness that sort of trails in a bit late. The bitterness from the middle hangs around a little, too.
It's a little flavour adventure. All in all, it's pretty tasty. I think this is a one off for me though. It's good and it has lots of character, but I'm not completely sold on it.
My rating: 6.5/10. This is a pretty good beer, it's just not hitting for the cycle.
As some of you may know, my wife is my second sipper and she hates IPA's. However, she loves mangoes, so this beer would be a challenge for her. She's unavailable at the moment however, so she will just have to go get her own another day and give me a rating then.
Or not.
There you have it, friends. The Ringmaster Mango Milkshake IPA by Railway City Brewing Co in St Thomas, Ontario ( a town famous for it's ill-fated introduction of trains to elephants) is an odd little brew, but it's worth a try in my opinion. Head over to railwaycitybrewing.com to check out everything this little gem of a brewery has to offer.
