As we hurl towards Halloween, our friends at Flying Monkey Craft Brewery in Barrie, Ontario have gotten themselves into the spirit of the occasion. Paranormal Imperial Pumpkin Ale's can features some iconic horror imagery, and a three eyed monkey flying a spaceship, so it has to be good, right?
First, it's the colour of a wet orangutan. That's not a bad thing, it's just the best comparison I could find for the colour. It smells like...pumpkin pie. I'm not even kidding. It's weird to smell pumpkin pie in a beer glass. Did I mention it's 10% alcohol volume? Ten Freakin Percent!
Without further ado, the tasting...
Good lord, it's liquid pumpkin pie. What the hell? The actual pumpkin flavour sort of comes in after the initial...what is that? Hmmm. To say the least my mouth is confused by what I'm dumping into it. The pumpkin pie taste is surprising, not because it's there (the description on the can says it tastes like pumpkin pie), but just how much it actually tastes like pumpkin pie.
My rating: 6/10
It's exactly what it says it is, but to be honest I can't imagine drinking more than one of these just to say I had a beer that tastes like pumpkin pie. It's like eggnog. You have that one every year because it's a holiday drink, but you don't have two.
My lovely wife is my second sipper. She was also pretty surprised at the boldness of pumpkin flavour.

Happy Halloween everyone. Celebrate this year with a few Paranormal Imperial Pumpkin Ales at your Halloween parties or just sit in your house with the lights off and pretend you aren't home while you eat all the tiny chocolate bars you intended to give to the kiddies, and sip a cold glass of pie.
