Ok, so this is a first for me: coconut porter. The hell you say! It's true. Coconut porter is a thing. This beer is called Greetings From Coconut County by the fine minds at Hometown Brewing Company in Langton, Ontario.
The white can had me a little uncertain what to expect when I poured this beer, but I was relieved to see a beautiful black beer fill my glass. It seems coconut can't take the black out of porter, and I'm very happy about that. This one is a respectable 5.6%, so there's lots of fun waiting for you in the tropical themed can.
Now let's see what coconut does for a porter in the taste department.
It's delicious, thankfully. I don't taste any coconut, but I do find that the toasted malt flavour that makes porters so delicious is well represented in this beer, but then it fades away very quickly. You won't catch this taste lingering just off to the side making everyone around it uncomfortable. It's here and then it's gone.
According to the ingredients listed on the can, there's "Real Desiccated Coconut, and Coconut Extract" in this brew. I'm not sure what desiccated means or if that's how it's spelled, but that's what it says on the ingredient list, so I believe there is in fact coconut in this beer somewhere. Whether or not I can taste it, I still really like this beer and I recommend it to anyone looking for a porter on the lighter side of the spectrum.
Not surprisingly, I don't find any official recommendation for glassware for coconut porter, however, all but the English porters I looked up came with the suggestion of an American or Nonic Pint glasses to drink from.

My lovely wife is my second sipper and she actually seemed to like this one. Kind of....

There you have it, friends. Greetings From Coconut County by Hometown Brewing Company in lovely Langton, Ontario is a delicious porter that I would call easy to drink, and even sort of light in it's own way. Light for a porter, that is. Compared to like a Coor's Light, it's basically the polar opposite of light. Check out the Hometown Brewing Company website at hometownbrew.com
