Hello everyone and welcome to Beers and Such, your one-stop blog for craft beer reviews brought to you by a regular guy experiencing these beers for the first time. Occasionally, I'll also review some other things that I feel need some reviewing.
Today I bring to you Double Up Coffee Milk Stout made by Old Tomorrow Ltd in the center of the universe, Toronto, Ontario. It's black and beautiful, as any stout worth its salt should be, and it's a beefy 6.5% so it will make you a great singer in less time than your average beer.
I was a little unsure about this one because the can is more like an over priced energy drink than a beer, but now that I see the goodness inside and get a smell of coffee/stout, I'm optimistic. Excited, even.
Let's dive in and see what we're working with.
Oh my gawd...that's delicious! The coffee flavour is amazing and it's blended beautifully with the toasted malt flavour stouts are known for. It's almost sweet. There's a slight aftertaste, but's closer to espresso than the lingering taste of a thick stout. For all the flavours battling for supremacy in this beer, it's surprisingly light, for a stout.
I don't know what situation this beer fits. It's really tasty, and I'm really enjoying it, so maybe if you happen to be sitting in front of a computer typing, this is your brew. Personally, I would drink this beer somewhat sparingly only because it is sweet, and I get sick of sweet pretty quickly.
It's really good and I recommend giving it the proper vessel. A stout glass seems appropriate, being a stout and all.
My rating: 9/10. The overly sweet taste is the only knock on this beer for me.
My lovely wife is my second sipper, and though she hates IPAs, she seems to tolerate the black beers more and she loves coffee as much as I do.
My wife's rating: 7/10. That might be the highest she's ever rated a beer in the 50+ reviews on this site so far. That gives this beer a place of honour around these parts.
There you have it, friends. Double Up Coffee Milk Stout by Old Tomorrow Ltd is a really good sipping beer I gladly recommend to anyone that likes stouts, coffee, and goodness. Check out oldtomorrow.com for more of what Old Tomorrow has to offer.
