Today's offering is the Broad Reach Noreaster IPA by the Stonehooker Brewing Company out of beautiful Mississauga, Ontario. I don't know what differentiates a Noreaster IPA from a standard IPA, so if you happen to have that info, please feel free to leave a comment down below.
Out of the can, this beer is hazy with a foamy carbonation that's usually missing from IPA's. It has as soft head on it that sticks around to make itself known. It looks good in the glass, weighs in at 5.4%, it has a nice subtle hop aroma, and I'm excited to try this puppy out.
Let's get to the tasting.
That's good. The first flavour that hits your mouth is hops, as you would expect from an IPA, but they're like introverted party guests because they make an appearance then quietly show themselves out. That's when a really nice fruit flavour strolls in and takes over the party. It's a slick transition from hoppy bitterness to fruity sweetness, and the whole thing is over by 11 pm because there's almost no after taste. We're talking that one guest that sticks around to help you clean up and then walks home because they had one wine spritzer too many and won't risk driving.
My rating: 9/10
I could definitely spend a few hours around a cooler full of ice with a couple buddies playing lawn darts (the ones from the 80's with the death points on them) and getting a little hazy on Broad Reach Noreaster IPA's.
My wife is my second sipper and she was pleasantly surprised by the fruity flavour of this beer.
My wife's rating: 6/10
A good IPA like this one should be served in IPA Glasses to maximize your beer drinking enjoyment. You might think to yourself "Self, a glass is a glass" and you'd be what I call wrong, partly. People that take their beer seriously know that the shape of a glass can affect the beer for a hundred different reasons, and glasses designed for a certain style of beer allow the brew to be its best.
