This should be a doozy, so settle in. Today I am going to be trying Adventures in Time Surfing by the Flying Monkey Craft Brewery in Barrie, Ontario. This is a double IPA, and it's a whopping 8.2%. Good lord. It has a signature can design that screams Flying Monkey with its bright colours and a very busy 60's style art. Funky.
But enough about bright colours, let's drink this beer.
Well...It starts off strong with its citrus and mango flavours, but then it sort of flops into an indescribable funk before finishing with another hit of fruit, only this time it's way less tasty. I can see drinking this beer if you're underage and you really want to get as much bang for your buck as humanly possible with no regard for your enjoyment.
Which reminds me of a time in high school when I did just that with a bottle of really bad wine and a friend of mine. We had to take a big drink then IMMEDIATELY eat a handful of chips to take the taste away. It did the trick, but when we ran out of chips before we ran out of cheap wine, it was a test of wills to see just how dedicated we were to our goals.
That being said, I can also see that there's more than likely lots of people out there that will like this beer even if I don't. It's got some character, and if you can get past the middle part of the taste adventure that is tough to swallow (pun very much intended), then you got yourself a high octane beverage.
I'll pass on this one.
If you do enjoy this beer, it's best served in an IPA glass or a tulip glass depending on your preference.
