Welcome to Beers and Such, a beer review site run by a handsome fellow with no expert knowledge or training whatsoever. I will dedicate chunks of my time to help you, the reader, choose a craft beer by drinking them and telling you all about it. You're welcome.
Today I'm going to dive into a beer called 8 Man English Pale Ale made by the folks at Mackinnon Brothers Brewing Co in Bath, Ontario. From what I read on the can, this beer is based on the English beers I like so much, so I'm pretty excited to try this one.
It's a dark rich amber colour, lightly carbonated, and a decent 5.8% alcohol. It smells like England! I'm not sure a lot of English beer is over 5%, but this one was brewed in Canada and we like our beer a little bit stronger than our founding fathers, I suppose.
Now, let's see if this beer tastes like England, and by that I mean rainy, with over priced gas and a love of kababs.
Oh that's good. It has a really nice malty favour that would fit right in with a best bitter pulled from an English tap. I really like this one. There's a bit of a weird bite on my tongue left over that I don't get from other beers, so that's odd. Still, I would gladly drink a few of these on a warm day. Or a cold day. Or a day with moderate temperatures, slight chance of rain, and sunny breaks in the afternoon.
I have spent some time in England, and this beer does remind me of long nights of over indulging in pints of good beer. It's not an exact match, and I don't think that's what the brewers were going for in the first place. It's a Canadian version of an English classic and it's well worth a try.
I would serve this brew in a standard pint glass to your craft beer drinking friends, and feel confident the session will go off without a hitch.
My rating: 8/10. I love the English taste and the memories it brings back.
My lovely wife is my second sipper and non-beer drinking assistant in all things Beers and Such.
